KLAVIERMANN IS A SHORT FILM THAT SHINES A LIGHT
ON AN UNKNOWN ERA OF BERLIN’S LGBT HISTORY

KLAVIERMANN (“Piano Man”) is a short film that explores the thriving LGBT culture of Berlin in the 1920s through the eyes of one couple, Theo and Elisabeth.

Theo, a trans* pianist, runs an LGBT bar in Berlin and makes money on the side through soliciting sex workers, using the bar as its premise. His cis girlfriend Elisabeth is exploring her own sexuality and campaigning for women's rights, but is not morally onside with Theo's management of the bar and the attached sex workers. Tensions rise in their relationship as their worldviews collide, and they begin to realize that Berlin’s LGBT utopia is more complicated and fragile than it may seem on the surface...

HUFEISENSIEDLUNG

The Hufeisensiedlung Britz was one of the first social housing estates in Berlin, built in 1925-33. It was designed by architect Bruno Taut, municipal planning head and co-architect Martin Wagner, garden architect Leberecht Migge and Neukölln gardens director Ottokar Wagler. Today it belongs to the Unesco World Heritage.

To create an authentic 1920s feel, an original apartment within the Hufeisensiedling was donated to the production to shoot both interior and exterior scenes.

WILDENBRUCH BAR

Wildenbruch is a historic bar located in Neukölln, Berlin. The bar was opened in 1907, and the original wooden bar and several architectural elements remain the same.

Today, they regularly host live events, such as concerts with local and international musicians/DJs, and film screenings. In Klaviermann, Wildenbruch served as the location for the fictional „Katzenschwanz Bar,“ which serves as a primary setting for the film.
